A Short Story- War Widow
War Widow.
Dalip Singh Wasan, Advocate.
My husband was killed while fighting in Indo-Pak War of 1965 and therefore, I was declared as War Widow by government of India. I was given financial aids as prescribed and the state of Punjab also appointed me as a class four employee under the state. This was an appointment on priority category and therefore, they gave me a station which was near to my town. I had been looking after two children which my husband left and my widow mother in law had shifted to my house because I was not available with my children for the whole day. I had been visiting to my place of posting daily and then the state gave me directions that I should stay in the village and I had to obey and carry out the order of the state.
I was not having proper education with me and therefore, the state had offered me a class IV job. I started family pension too and in due course I started adjusting myself as per the changed circumstances. My husband had got three younger brothers and all were visiting our family and were affording all types of help to us. They had been visiting my station of posting too to show and establish that I was not all alone and they were there to look after me and guard my interests.
Years after years passed on and the state did not give me my home town. The officers in the department were of the view that I had been given appointment on compassionate grounds and they had done their duty. It was not obligatory for the state to give me my home town to enable me to look after my children myself. All my applications had been ignored. Instead of giving me my home town, one fo the directors transferred to an other district touching border of the country. I had to shift to that place because nobody was listening to me. My brother in law had been approaching the ministers and some other high officers but none was listening to him. N Ultimately he could approach the state chief minister through some person. But when my brother in law was giving application to the Chief Minister, he asked, “ Who is the person who wants his or her transfer?” When the Chief Minister heard that it was a case of a class IV employee he said, “ I am the Chief Minister of the State. I am not supposed to work on the transfer cases of class IV employees of the state.: The Chief Minister wanted to take the application, but my brother in law took back the application and returned without getting my transfer order.
Then he met the Director of the Department who said that I had been appointed and the state has done its duty. It is not obligatory for the state to adjust me at the station of my choice. The Director was very right. But my brother in law had been explaining to him that I was a War Widow. The director was not understanding the meaning and importance of War Widow and some people sitting in his room also started supporting the version of the Director. At this stage my brother in law stood up and started making a speech, “ You people never sent a son of yours to the army. You do not know the pains when a young man of a family is killed in war. You cannot feel the pains what the family had to suffer. I am the real brother of the martyr and you are speaking something which at least an Indian should not speak against a soldier who has given his life for the nation. He died so that the nation should live on”. Next day my brother in law met the minister of the department and explained the whole story what had happened with him. That minister was an Ex-serviceman and he was the first person in the administration who realized the gravity of the situation and he called the Director and directed him to send a jeep to the station to which I had been transferred and bring me back and on his order I had been adjusted at the home town and I started looking after my children and helping my old widow mother in law.
