Model trains are fun, no one can deny that.
While a lot of that fun comes from watching your train go around the track, stopping at different stations and taking in all of that fresh scenery, there is a different type of fun that comes long before that.
That's right, building the track is insanely fun, probably a lot more fun than you'd think.
So why is it fun?
Well think about it, you get to design an entire world to your own liking, from the streets, to the rivers, the valleys, the towns, it's all yours to create.
When will you ever have that kind of creative power again?
Probably not in the near future, so you'll want to take advantage of this moment, that's for sure.
But as with anything, there are several safety precautions that you'll have to keep in mind if you want to have any degree of model railroading success.
Yes it is just a model train set, but you would be amazed at some of the things that can go wrong!
So let's talk about a few of the things that you need to do in order to have fun and stay safe at the same time.
First let's talk about safety equipment.
One of the most important things that you can wear when building your model train set are goggles.
Protective goggles will protect you from flying debris.
While that's not saying that there will actually be any, it's better to be safe than sorry now isn't it?
You should also wear a pair of work gloves because not only will you be working with sharp edges, you will probably also be dealing with some sharp tools.
These could cause some nasty cuts that might even require emergency treatment if you don't take care.
Tools are a very important consideration as well.
When you're just starting out you might not have the top of the line power tools, and good tools might be expensive but that doesn't mean you should go for the cheapest tools you can find.
As a matter of fact, doing that can be downright dangerous and irresponsible.
For one thing, always make sure that the tools you get are sturdy and properly set within their handles.
If you have a hammer you don't want the head to be rattling around. Though it might not seem like a huge deal, it will seem like one if the head snaps off and goes flying!
Remember that you will also be working with electricity, and electricity is nothing to fool around with!
Make sure that you take all of the standard safety precautions that are associated with electrical work.
Even though you are only dealing with low voltage on the track it can cause a high amount of damage if you're not careful.
Faulty power packs can be dangerous. Make sure the leads are in good order at all times.
When working with paints, glues and solvents make sure you have good ventilation. Remember most of these are flammable so make sure there are no sparks or open flames where you are working.
Finally make sure that everyone near you has the proper safety equipment, especially children.
There's nothing wrong with people watching, just make sure they're not in any danger!
So long as you follow and keep all of the safety precautions in mind, you should have a nice, enjoyable, model train building experience!
